Introduction
Innovation and practical work based experience are hallmarks of
education and training at NMIT. This dynamic TAFE Institute is one
of Victoria's largest providers of vocational education and
training and offers hundreds of customised programs for industry,
commerce, interest groups and local government. NMIT has six
campuses in the northern suburbs of Melbourne (and a rural campus
at Ararat). NMIT has built its reputation by offering education
programs that blend theory with relevant industry practice. NMIT
students have access to modern facilities and have many
opportunities to work with industry partners. NMIT training
reflects the latest workplace practices, whether it be on a work
site, in an art studio, manufacturing shop floor or in the highly
competitive corporate world. NMIT has fully equipped laboratories
and workshops, audiovisual equipment and studios, language
laboratories, and computer facilities. NMIT graduates are work
ready and employable with the right combination of knowledge and
skills.
NMIT continues to expand its great range of educational programs
with pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships programs
and over 500 nationally accredited vocational education and
training (VET) courses leading to Advanced Diploma and Bachelor
level qualifications. In 2009 NMIT will offer an expanded range of
bachelor degrees in Applied Aquaculture, Australian Popular Music,
Equine Studies, Hospitality Management, Illustration, Viticulture
and Winemaking and Writing and Publishing and associate degrees in
International Business, International Business Management and
Accounting.
NMIT’s profile is growing internationally with more than 28
educational partnerships throughout Asia where there are over
18,000 enrolments in NMIT courses.
Partnering with
Industry
NMIT has a number of programs working with industry to
commercialise products and services for the manufacturing,
engineering and building, thoroughbred, viticulture, and
aquaculture industries.
The aquaculture facility at Epping in the City of Whittlesea
provides both research and training facilities for business in
Melbourne's North wishing to establish or improve existing
operations.
NMIT provides a range of training services for industry with the
Business Enterprise Centre, and Faculty based industry
partnerships.
The NMIT Foundation recognises the many partnerships that exist
between NMIT, businesses and industry. These partnerships include a
generous study grant programs that ensures students have the
opportunity to be awarded study grants and prizes donated by
industry sponsors.
NMIT has six campuses in the northern
suburbs of Melbourne:
Fairfield
Set amidst picturesque parkland only five kilometres from the
CBD, the Fairfield campus at the former Fairfield Hospital site.
The site has undergone an $18 million refurbishment and
re-development program, up to 700 students can study in modern and
up-to-date facilities skyline.
Preston
Only nine kilometres north of the CBD, Preston campus houses
NMIT Directorate. The Preston campus is home to St George's
Restaurant, a fully-licensed restaurant and bistro which is one of
Melbourne's premier hospitality training facilities. The new
Conference Facilities host many events and conferences offering
conference organisers, fine food and modern conference facilities.
The campus also incorporates some of the finest facilities in
Tourism and Hospitality as well as courses in Visual Arts,
Information Technology, Electrotechnology, Design & Drafting,
Koorie Services, Health & Community Services, Office
Administration, Work Education, Language Studies and Commerce.
Heidelberg
NMIT Heidelberg campus, 15 minutes from the CBD, is one of
Victoria's major training centres in building trades, electronics
and engineering. Heidelberg's training facilities simulate real
work environments that are popular with students and employers. The
robotics simulation facility presents students with many challenges
as do the AutoCAD training centre and the plumbing classrooms
equipped with the latest appliances and tools donated by
industry.
Epping
NMIT Epping Campus is the biggest provider of training to the
agriculture sector. The campus is home to award winning cattle,
welding workshops, a forklift training area and glass houses for
herb production. It also hosts one of Victoria's few indoor
re-circulating aquaculture facilities. Nearby are NMIT's two
impressive training farms, a farm at Yan Yean and a 60 hectare
horse stud and 8 hectare vineyard, Northern Lodge in Eden Park.
Greensborough
Greensborough Campus' hilltop position offers sweeping views of
the distant city and lush surrounds. Located in the heart of a
residential growth area 25 kilometres north east of Melbourne, the
Greensborough Campus caters to a diverse student base. The
Greensborough Campus has attractive gardens which are developed and
maintained by students of the NMIT's popular Landscape
Gardening course.
