La Trobe University is one of
Australia’s leading teaching and research universities. The
University takes a brave, bold approach to higher education and
delivering socially responsible, inclusive, relevant and radical
teaching, learning and research.
La Trobe University was established in 1964, as Victoria’s third
university. It has since grown to encompass seven campuses across
the state of Victoria, with its main campus situated in Melbourne
at Bundoora, on a magnificent 330-hectare parkland site only 30
minutes from the CBD.
The Bundoora campus houses excellent teaching and research
facilities, the outstanding La Trobe University library,
residential colleges, retail outlets, sports and recreational
facilities, an extensive Research and Development park and a unique
wildlife sanctuary. 
La Trobe is a strong provider of regional higher education in
Australia, with teaching campuses located in Bendigo,
Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton. These campuses have access
to the University’s centralised services and resources, and are
renowned for the inclusiveness of their on-campus communities. The
campus network enables strong graduate outcomes for students in
regional and rural areas and contributes significantly to the
development of regional Victoria.
The University prides itself on the quality of its teaching and
student support services and has recently achieved one of the
highest rankings for graduate satisfaction in Victoria (Good
Universities Guide 2009). It has more than 26,000 students,
including over 4,500 international students from over 90 countries,
and nearly 3,000 staff. A wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate
and research degree programs are offered through five faculties:
Law and Management; Humanities and Social Sciences; Education;
Health Sciences; Science, Technology and Engineering.
La Trobe is a member of the Innovative Research Universities of
Australia (IRUA) alliance. It has a strong, diverse research
profile, enhanced by the presence of the Institute for Advanced
Study (which incorporates the Research Centre for Linguistic
Typology) and a number of internationally renowned research
centres, including the Centre for Dialogue and the Centre for China
Studies.
The Biosciences Research Centre, a $230 million world-class
facility for agricultural biosciences research mainly focusing on
agricultural science, is to be built at the Bundoora campus and is
a joint project of the Victorian Government and La Trobe
University.
Faculty-based research centres include the Australian Research
Centre in Sex, Health and Society; and the Mother and Child Health
Research Centre. Major water research centres are located at
Albury-Wodonga and Mildura campuses, and Bendigo campus is home to
the Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities.
La Trobe University is committed to internationalisation and is
a founding member of the International Network of Universities
(INU). The University has a significant number of international
links in research, teaching and exchange. La Trobe students are
encouraged to add an international dimension to their degree
through a vibrant student exchange program. Several La Trobe
University programs are delivered in China, Bhutan, Singapore and
Vietnam.
La Trobe University has a full range of function facilities
available from the Eagle Conference and Function Centre, and the
John Scott Meeting House, overlooking the University's magnificent
native gardens and lakes to residential colleges, meeting areas at
the R&D Park and a unique Wildlife Reserve.
